Breeds Of Guinea Pigs

Breeds of Guinea pigs are to be taken care of before going in for the breeding of animals. There are different breeds of Guinea pigs in this world.

Most common breeds of these animals are American Coronet, Peruvian, Teddy, Texel, and White crested guinea pigs.

All breeds except the American Coronet and White crested ones, come in satin with a shinier coat.

Coronets, Peruvians and Silkie breeds of this animal are not generally recommended to the beginners in this line. This is mainly due to the difficulty to groom since their coat is longer, in general.

Texels are the breeds in which the hair materials resemble the Silkie but curls are present and are often like tightly wound corkscrew curls. Their native is England and these animals are loved by many. Curls cover the entire body and even the stomach regions are covered.

Abyssinian breeds have symmetrical rosette in which the hair materials originate from the centre and these animals have crests on body regions.

American cavy are lovely ones with short, fine hair materials on the body. They have a short Roman nose.

Albino breeds have white hair but with pink eyes.

Similarly, Roan breeds have darker hair that may be blackish or reddish but white hairs are found intermixed often.

Dalmatian breeds are found in many places and these animals have white body with dark spots.

Golden Agouti has a red tip and black root.

Most of the Alpaca breeds are the first generation hybrids of Peruvian and other breeds of Guinea pigs.

Coronets have an appealing coat with hair passing backwardly. The rosette is present on the head region. Head is short with a Roman nose. The hair materials are longer.

Silkie or sheltie is the breed that has long hair materials falling back over the body. However, the hair materials may never forward over the face. These breeds of Guinea pigs may have a teardrop shape when viewed from above.

English Merino is the curly coated Coronet. The crest is present on the centre of the head region, in between the ears.

Rex guinea pigs are genetically variables ones from Teddy. The hair materials of Rex should not be more than half an inch and may be preferably shorter, in these breeds. No rosettes are present and the hair materials are to be uniform.

The Rex breeds are more bristled unlike Teddies. Some similarities may be seen between the Rex and Teddy breed. The Teddy breeds have relatively long hair materials that cover the belly regions unlike many breeds of these animals.

Alpaca, Crested, Lunkarya and Ridge back are said to be the rare breeds of Guinea pigs. Similarly, breeds of Guinea pigs generally have different types of color on body.
